Bombings Kill 60 at University In Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Jan. 16 -- The coordinated detonation of two bombs during the after-school rush at a Baghdad   university killed at least 60 people Tuesday and wounded more than 140 in what university officials described as one of the deadliest attacks on academia since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

N.Korea: Deal reached in U.S. nuke talks

By BURT HERMAN, Associated Press Writer Fri Jan 19, 2:29 PM ET

    SEOU, South Korea -

  • North Koreasaid it reached an agreement with the U.S. during talks this week on its nuclear program, and the top U.S. nuclear envoy expressed optimism Friday that progress could be made when wider arms negotiations reconvene.

  • SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea said it reached an agreement with the U.S. during talks this week on its nuclear program, and the top U.S. nuclear envoyexpressed optimism Friday that progress could be made when wider arms negotiations reconvene. ADVERTISEMENT North Korea's Foreign Ministry said three days of talks in Berlin between U.S. envoy Christopher Hill and North Korea's main nuclear negotiator Kim Kye Gwan had been held "in a positive and sincere atmosphere and a certain agreement was reached there." No further details were given. Washington, however, played down talk of an agreement. "I think it's premature to say there is an agreement — premature to say the least," deputy White House press secretary Dana Perino said Friday. Hill said the talks laid the foundation for progress when six-nation nuclear negotiations resume and that he had agreed with his North Korean counterpart "on a number of issues." He declined to elaborate. "I am pretty convinced that we have the basis for a good session of the six-party talks," Hill told reporters in Seoul after meeting South Korean Foreign Minister Song Min-soon and nuclear envoy Chun Yung-woo. The last round of six-nation talks in Beijing in December — two months after the North conducted its first-ever nuclear test in October — ended without any breakthroughs. The negotiating countries, which include South Korea, the U.S., Japan, China and Russia, had been seeking to outline how to implement a September 2005 agreement in which the North pledged to disarm in exchange for aid and security guarantees. But North Korea refused to discuss its arms program and again demanded the U.S. lift its blacklisting of a Macau bank. The U.S. had accused the bank of being complicit in the communist country's alleged counterfeiting and money laundering, leading the bank to freeze North Korean assets worth about $24 million. The North did not directly mention the financial dispute in its statement Friday, but said progress was made in overcoming obstacles to the six-nation talks. "We paid attention to the direct dialogue held by the (North) and the U.S. in a bid to settle knotty problems in resolving the nuclear issue," the North's ministry said in the statement, released by the country's official Korean Central News Agency. A South Korean news report said the six-nation arms talks could resume early next month due to progress made at the Germany meetings. Yonhap news agency, citing an unnamed diplomat in Seoul, said Thursday there is a high possibility the talks would resume in Beijing the week of Feb. 5. On arriving in Seoul earlier Friday, Hill said he hoped six-nation talks would be held again before the Lunar New Year holiday celebrated across Asia that falls this year on Feb. 18. "It's up to the Chinese (hosts) but I would think we'll have a six-party meeting pretty soon," he said. The U.S. is holding separate negotiations with North Korea on the financial dispute, but the last session that was held alongside the nuclear talks in December made no progress.

      ReutersWednesday March 28, 09:28

BEIJING (Reuters) - The world's tallest man, whose search for a bride covered the world, ended up marrying a woman from his home town nearly half his age and more than two feet shorter, Chinese media reported on Wednesday. Bao Xishun, 56, a 2.36-metre (7-ft, 9-inch) herdsman listed by Guinness World Records as the tallest living man, married a 29-year-old saleswoman, the Beijing News said. Both come from Chifeng in Inner Mongolia. "After sending out marriage advertisements across the world and going through a long selection process, the efforts have finally paid off," the newspaper said. It was the first wedding for Bao and his bride, Xia Shujuan, a mere 1.68 metres (5 ft 6 inches) tall. Bao reached his height in a seven-year spurt that began in his teens and which doctors have yet to explain, according to Guinness. After a career in the army, where he was recruited for a basketball team, he returned to Inner Mongolia. He now herds livestock and hires himself out for publicity stunts. In December, Bao saved the lives of two dolphins by reaching deep into their stomachs with his 1.06-metre (42-inch) long arm to pull out pieces of plastic, according to Chinese media.

Diplomats await access to Iran 15

    Thursday March 29, 08:32 AM

  •  British officials are waiting to see if they will be given access to the 15 sailors and Marines being held in Iran. The country's foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki said diplomats could meet the service personnel but only if the Government admits they entered Iranian waters. "We have accepted that, there is no problem. Measures are under way. They can meet them," he said. "First they have to admit that they have made a mistake. Admitting the mistake will facilitate a solution to the problem." Mr Mottaki also appeared to back away from earlier suggestions that Leading Seaman Turney was about to be released. He spoke after footage of the captured Briton was broadcast on Iranian television. Leading Seaman Turney, the only woman among the sailors and Marines, was shown wearing a black headscarf and smoking a cigarette while a letter purportedly written by her to her family said the group had "trespassed" into Iranian waters. The other 14 members of the group were shown by Al-Alam television in their uniforms apparently well and eating a meal off plastic plates. The Foreign Office denounced the broadcast of the pictures as "completely unacceptable". "There is no doubt that our personnel were seized in Iraqi waters and were entitled to be there," said a spokesman. "We await further details from the Iranian government on their undertaking to act on our request for consular access to the Royal Navy personnel. "We continue to press strongly for their immediate release."

  • Iran puts detained British sailors on TV

UN Will Not 'Deplore' Iran Over Seizures Thursday March 29, 09:59 PM Britain has failed to win UN support for a statement deploring Iran's detention of 15 UK sailors and marines and calling for their immediate release. A senior Iranian official suggested Iran may put the British captives on trial. After three hours of talks, ambassadors from the 15 UN Security Council nations were still trying to agree on a watered-down press statement. One compromise that would take note the council's concern about the detentions and call for their immediate release was rejected by Russia, diplomats said. Russia proposed instead that the statement take note of the general situation and call for humanitarian access. Russia proposed instead that the statement take note of the general situation and call for humanitarian access. The nation, which has strong commercial links with Tehran, raised serious objections to the thrust of the original British statement. The sailors and marines were seized after they allegedly went into Iranian waters - but Britain has insisted the servicemen and woman were in Iraqi waters. The UK had wanted the council to say it deplores Iran's actions, to state that the incident took place in Iraqi waters, and demand the Britons' immediate release of the Britons. Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, said only that he had made "constructive suggestions" and hoped members could agree on a statement.

  • 20 U.S. service members
    killed in Iraq

By BASSEM MROUE, Associated Press Writer Sat Jan 20, 6:50 PM ET BAGHDAD, Iraq - At least 20 American service personnel were killed in military operations Saturday in one of the deadliest days for U.S. forces since the Iraq war began, and authorities also announced two U.S. combat deaths from the previous day. ADVERTISEMENT The day's worst loss came from the crash of a U.S. Army helicopter northeast of Baghdad that killed 13 service members. An attack Saturday night blamed on militiamen in the city of Karbala killed five soldiers. Roadside bombs killed another soldier in the capital and one in Nineveh province north of Baghdad. The military gave little information on the crash of the Black Hawk during good weather in Diyala province, where U.S. and Iraqi forces have been battling Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias around the city of Baqouba for months. Lt. Col. Josslyn Aberle, a U.S. spokeswoman, said the cause of the crash had not been determined. Navy Capt. Frank Pascual, a member of a U.S. media relations team in the United Arab Emirates, told Al-Arabiya television that the helicopter was believed to have suffered technical troubles before going down. It was the fourth deadliest crash since the war started in March 2003. The worst occurred Jan. 26, 2005, when a Marine transport helicopter went down during a sandstorm in the western desert. Thirty Marines and one sailor were killed — the most U.S. personnel to die in a single incident in Iraq. The U.S. military later reported that militia fighters attacked a provincial headquarters in the Shiite Muslim holy city of Karbala, killing five American soldiers and wounding three Saturday night. The statement said "an illegally armed militia group" attacked the building with grenades, small arms and "indirect fire," which usually means mortars or rockets. "A meeting was taking place at the time of the attack to ensure the security of Shiite pilgrims participating in the Ashoura commemorations," said a statement from Brig. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, deputy commander of the Multi-National Division-Baghdad.
